Soccer snaps losing streak

As Bishop Stadium opened it’s doors, it embraced soccer as if it had never left. Coming off four straight losses that sunk the Indians boys soccer team to a winless beginning of the season, they at last found their first victory beating Shawnee Heights at home 2-0.

“We always like to win at our home stadium and we really needed to win after the bad start,” junior forward Nimrod Eshar said.

He pulled off the team’s first assist of the season as well as the second goal to help the Indians win in their home debut.

“[Scoring] was really a relief,” Eshar said. Going for four games without a goal for a striker or an attacker is certainly hard, and scoring that goal was certainly a big relief.”

Manhattan had been shut-out in all but one game in the season until this match.

“We were simply mentally stronger,” junior midfielder Ben Choi said.

The team had gone through a re-tryout process after their fourth loss of the season in an effort to turn things around for the team. A strategy that could be viewed as successful after Wednesday’s shut-out win; the first for junior goalkeeper Zachary Bergeron.

“We want to keep this up. This game was hard but we have to keep this up and hopefully find another win.” Eshar said.

The Indians will play another game in front of their home crowd today against Seaman before going on the road to try to find their first victory away from home against rivals Washburn Rural.
