Wrestling places third place at Grand Island Meet

On Saturday the Manhattan wrestling team traveled to Grand Island, Nebraska for their fourth meet of the season. The Indians finished third out of thirty teams, going 68-24. Manhattan also accomplished going to the gold bracket for first time since 2006, earning them their second best finish at the Grand Island Invitational ever.

Manhattan was led by six wrestlers who went undefeated at 7-0, freshman Tate Souder wrestling at 106, sophomore Bubba Wilson at 132, juniors Jalen Harper at 152 and Devin Norris at 138, and seniors Mason Wallace and Eldon Piccou at 145 and 285 respectively. Norris received his 100th win on Saturday.

A standout performer for the Indians was freshman Tate Souder, who went 7-0.

“Our freshman Tate Souder stepped it up, I honestly didn’t think he would do that great, but he did.” Wallace said. Tate Souder did step up as he helped his team make gold brackett, he was the only freshman and yet he still managed to go undefeated.

“I know we had one close dual (gold bracket match) we shouldn’t have lost, if we started out differently, we would have finished differently.” junior Abraham Sanchez said. The Indians competed against teams from all over the nation.Their best performance may have been the first day at Nebraska as they scored 29 pins. After having their winning streak ended by Gretna High, Manhattan beat both Columbus and Bennington High in order to achieve their third place finish.He went 6-1 wrestling at the two-day tournament.

Manhattan will now prepare for their next tournament on Jan. 7. The Indians will go against four time national championship winning school, Norton High.
