Softball splits on senior night

The softball team felt pressure to succeed on Senior Night to honor their one and only senior player. The first game was rocky with communication and resulted in a loss. However, the girls turned the night around by finishing off with a win, splitting with Topeka High 3-7 and 10-9.

The players were determined to achieve success in honor of their senior, Chelsey Henry.

“There was definitely more pressure with senior night,” junior Anna Batt said. “With it being her last home game and senior night we all just wanted to get a win for her.”

Throughout the year, Henry faced challenges with being the oldest one on the team. Ultimately, she enjoyed the leadership role.

“It has been kind of hard because I have had the responsibility of making sure all the players are up-to-date on when and where practice was,” Henry said. “I also have to stay up during games because I am one of the big-girl role models, so as much as it’s been hard I have also enjoyed it because I am able to help the girls with whatever they need.”

As the realization hit that it would be her last game as a Lady Indian at Anneberg Park, Henry was content with finishing her career at home with a win.

“It felt amazing to get my last win playing on that field,” Henry said. “It was kind of nerve wracking because we were down, but we stuck together to get the job done.”

In regards to the contrast between the first and second game, elimination of errors was the key to their success.

“I think we realized that we could battle back after we made mistakes,” Batt said. “We got down on ourselves and it was hard to come back from that, but second game we had more confidence.”

Although the regular season is now over, the regional game will be in Olathe against Lawrence High today. In order to prepare for the regional games, practicing offense is a priority for the team.

“We will definitely practice our hitting, especially on two strikes to prepare for our regional games,” Batt said.
