The MHS Theater Department held its final performances of the play “Our Town” on May 2-4 in Rezac Auditorium. This marked the final production for the department after a year of successful performances.
“The play was definitely really fun but also very tiring,” junior Micah Pape, who played George Gibbs in the play, said. “It was one of the first more serious plays MHS has done in a few years, so it was really fun being able to not have to focus only on being able to make people laugh.”
Theater members work hard the weeks before in preparation. Cast members had to memorize lines and practice specific scenes, while the behind-the-scenes workers built sets and worked on technical aspects like lighting.
“One challenge I had was memorization, because the lines are very hard to memorize,” Pape said. “Another thing we did that was challenging was pantomiming, where we used very little physical props so it was up to us to be able to pretend to hold and use objects throughout the show.”
The play the cast performed was “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder. The play’s plot explores the everyday life, love and mortality of characters in the town of Grover’s Corner, emphasizing how ordinary moments can be beautiful.
“The play went really well,” junior Bryce Hutchinson, who played Dr. Gibbs said. “I really enjoyed getting to try doing a serious play. It was difficult to switch from the over-the-top acting of the comedies to the more mellow acting of dramas.”
The success of the play proved to be a great end of the year for all members of the theater department, especially seniors, as it was their final performance as an MHS student.
“One highlight was it being the last show with the seniors in the department, and being able to perform for the last night of the show with them will always be something I remember,” Pape said.
