A new and unique movie came out in April and has become one of the most interesting stories in my opinion. “Death of a Unicorn” by writer and director Alex Scharefman shatters the typical image of a unicorn in this movie and makes the viewer question the innocence of such a mythical creature. This movie is a R rated film that includes drug use, vaping, language and a lot of violence.
The actors in this movie are Paul Rudd as Elliot and Jenna Ortega as Ridley, portraying a father and daughter. The total cost of the film was 15 million and made a total of 12.4 million domestically. The opening weekend the movie achieved a total of 5.7 million.
The acting in the movie was well done, the actors showed the appropriate emotions and really got into the viewers mind. The puppets and CGI of the unicorns gave them a real look and helped keep the viewer engaged. The unicorns do alternate between black and white, but the CGI makes it clear that they are the same creature(s). The film takes a bit of storytelling to get to the deaths, but that story is well done and sets up the whole movie for the events that follow.
The movie starts off with a father and daughter on their way to a pharmaceutical meeting in Canada which happens to be close to a wildlife reserve. As they are driving to the meeting they run over a unicorn. The daughter in her interest of the creature touches the horn of the beast and her father ends up killing the unicorn completely to pop her out of a trance. This leads to a series of events that happen to the family and this business meeting. They quickly discover that unicorn’s blood can heal anything and the family who owns the pharmaceutical company selfishly try to monetize this discovery. This leads to the mistreatment of unicorns and is quickly followed with dark results that you will have to watch the movie to learn more about.
The trailer for the movie quickly obtained my interest because my initial thought was evil unicorns would be intriguing. The movie was an interesting take on unicorns and gave them an increased amount of mystery. The theme was definitely, “don’t be selfish.” This movie was highly entertaining and I recommend it for any viewer of the correct maturity level for a movie with this rating.
