With the end of the school year nearing, many students are becoming stressed out with finishing classes getting ready for the summer. With this stress mental health is a big concern in the final weeks of school.
The Mentor Editorial Board believes there are many reasons for the rise in mental health issues among students. One of the big reasons for the rise in mental health problems is the phone use among students. Phones have become very accessible to students in schools and having social media in front of them all day long. Lots of students start comparing themselves to others online and it becomes an addiction to compare yourself to others online. Along with comparing on social media, there is a lot of cyber bullying that goes on, which contributes to many negative emotions among students that highly effect their mental health.
Another big reason for the talk about mental health ties into the last few months of the school year. There is a lot of stress finishing classes. Students are given more homework and in class work trying to get every last bit of information in before the big final or AP test. On top of the school work many students are stressed about their final sports games wrapping up. Many students are also wrapping up State competitions, which cause even more stress on top of the school work in those classes. With all of these it’s hard for students to get real rest and they never have time to recharge and take some stress off their backs. Students just never stop working and working until the end of the year when they finally get a break.
All of these are big problems leading to mental health problems among students which is why our teachers at MHS are giving advisory lessons about mental health which is great for our students to know that the teachers understand they have a lot of workload on them.
