Freya Skye, a singer that has had music in Disney series like “Descendants/Zombies” released a new song Aug. 11. On the surface, this song sounds energizing but deep down it is about something sad. Skye’s new single is called “Gold’s Gone.” The best description of Skye’s music is that it is a mix between Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.
“Gold’s Gone” is a soft, guitar-heavy song along with a lot of singing. The main chorus of the song is very catchy and the lyrics are able to rhyme without vocal help. This song uses a number of instruments like drums, violins, guitar and piano. This song also implements lots of echoes in the vocals, which is very satisfying to the listener.
The meaning of the song is sad despite how up beat the music sounds. I believe the meaning of the song is that she is trying to hold onto something that is fading. The lyrics “While I’m still holding light in my hands” makes me believe that she is referring to life. She could also be referring to a relationship and trying to keep it together.
The music video for “Gold’s Gone” is about how she hangs out with her friends in the summer. The choreography in the video is interesting. Most of the back up dancers are just there, until the main chorus begins and they begin to dance, but the dancing that occurs is unnatural. It is like the dancers were given a beat and were told to improv. Skye looks wonderful in the music video, her dance being very beat based. In the music video, Skye also wears a coat in front of a pool, which doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t really enjoy the music video as much as I enjoy the music by itself.
Skye’s music is very enjoyable overall but “Gold’s Gone” isn’t my favorite song done by Skye. I enjoy the more drum heavy songs done by Skye, mostly for the contrast between her high voice and the bass that the drums bring. The songs like this are “Lose My Head” and “Can’t Fake It.” Despite “Gold’s Gone” not being my favorite, this song still shows off her vocal skills very well.
If you like pop music like Swift then you should give Skye’s new single a listen. If you are more interested in Lady Gaga, then I recommend listening to some of Skye’s previous albums. Skye is an everybody rated listener in my opinion because there is a song for everyone.
