Pops Choir members performed their tour set at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Home last Friday, Oct. 24 during seventh hour.
They took to soulful 1950s based swing dance, twists and shimmies, triple steps and catchy pop hits from “Hairspray” that captivated seniors in the crowd for its 17-minute runtime.
“It’s nice to give them something to watch,” junior Graham Brueseke said. “because a lot of times they don’t have a lot of stuff going on in their lives anymore… and it’s nice to be able to bring some of that recreation to them and perform for them.”
As a part of their program, boys and girls were split into separate groups mid set to perform different songs. In their black slacks and white button-ups, boys performed “It Takes Two.” As soon as the boys finished, the girls glided onto the stage in their standard red dresses to sing, “Mama, I’m A Big Girl Now.”
“It makes me happy, because some people were born in that time frame,” senior Leah Herring said. “Or, got to experience that. And I got to see older people’s faces light up, and they were like, ‘Oh, I know that song.’ Or, like, ‘I’ve danced to that before.’ And it’s super cool.”
Retired teachers were spotted in the crowd and seniors brightened, they appreciated the song and dance from the Pops Choir immensely.
“I saw an older gentleman, and he was mouthing the words and snapping to the rhythm,” Herring said. “That just makes my heart so happy that I can give that joy to them.”
This week, the Pops Choir has three performances. They started off the week with a Monday performance at Marlatt at seventh hour, with a scheduled performance on Friday for Lee, dressed up in their Halloween costumes.
“After Friday, we’re going to Eisenhower in the morning,” Brueseke said, “where we’re just going to be… introducing the Pops choir to the middle school choir so that… we can incentivize them to like, pursue high school choir.”
