Story by Lane Lewison

Sophomore Xavier Martinez is a staff photographer for MHS Student Media. He returned to Photo for Media to add onto the experience he built in the class during his freshman year.

“I did [it] last year, first semester,” Martinez said. “The environment was great. There were friendly, nice people.”

Martinez spends his free time playing baseball, switching between pitcher, outfielder and first baseman for the Manhattan Indians and his club team, the Barnstormers. Martinez dreams of one day playing ball professionally, particularly for his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox.

“I grew up playing baseball since I was four years old,” Martinez said. “Even my dad played it, he went D1 and he taught me everything I know about baseball. He’s always liked the Boston Red Sox.”

Martinez’s love for the game is contagious.

“I like the history of it,” Martinez said. “The way you play it, the thinking behind it, the plays, how you execute the plays and the work behind playing baseball.”
