Comedy and Horror Coming for fun in ‘Ready or Not’

When I think of a scary movie, I didn’t think hide and seek.

A good scary movie should be able to keep you on edge at all times. “Ready or Not” does that.

“Ready or Not” — directed by Tyler Gillet and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin — does just that. Released on Aug. 21, “Ready or Not” was set up to be a version of the old movie and board game “Clue.”

Right when you start to relax, another scary in-law jumps out at you, filling the movie with lots of jump scares rather than creepy horror movie content. I liked that it wasn’t all creepy scenes and had some humor to lighten things up a bit.

The movie follows the main character Grace — portrayed by breakout leading lady Samara Weaving, who’s new to leading a movie cast — on her wedding night where she was required to play a game with her new in-laws. You bet that she didn’t know that her new family was gearing up to murder her for a satanic ritual.

The weapons in the movie are actually based off the weapons in “Clue,” so it was fitting that the in-laws’ background was making money by producing board games. Despite its dark premise, the movie had some surprisingly hilarious lines and showed some insight into how people would actually act in that situation. Grace wasn’t a scared bride trying to run and keep hiding. Instead, the girl armed herself and worked on getting out of there as quickly as possible. I respected her for it and I was rooting for her the whole time.

The scary parts came when she was found by the in-laws. That was also when the really graphic violence took place. Many parts were very gruesome, so if you do not like bloody action scenes you may want to look away.

The cast was filled with many new and old actors. Samara Weaving is a new actress in the film industry, compared to Andie MacDowell who portrayed her mother-in-law. Known most famously for the movies “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Groundhog Day,” the model-turned-actress played a character who was very likeable because she was so much more humane than the other in-laws. In the beginning of the movie she was kind to Grace and really wanted to welcome her into their family — until the game started.

Personally, I loved the movie. The ending was so perfect and hilarious and I hope the rumors of a sequel are true.
