The Manhattan Indians softball team is in the midst of a packed week, as they finish off the regular season with three double-headers in just four days.
“We could possibly get tired, obviously, with the amount of games we have,” senior Haiden Gaither said. “I think we’re just going to be focusing on trying to play our best at each and every game.”
The Indians played Emporia on the road Monday, a game that was originally supposed to be played earlier in the season, but got postponed due to weather conditions. One day later, the Indians host Washburn Rural for senior night.
The Indians have three seniors on Varsity this year: Gaither, Jocelyn Harms and Isabelle Peabody.
“It’s going to be setting in that it’s going to be one of our last games, our last home game,” Gaither said. “So it’s going to be a little emotional, but still try to focus on the game.”
After senior night, the Indians wrap up their season with two games against Hays.
The Indians have had plenty of rest time, having played their last games on April 30 at home where they split their double-header vs Seaman 1-1. In the first game, the Indians were left scoreless in the first five innings and trailed 1-0 going into the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Indians rallied with back-to-back home runs, a two-run home run from Josie Alesana, the seventh of her freshman campaign, and a solo homer from sophomore Gracen Neitzel, her first of the year.
“I think it got everyone very excited and pumped up,” Neitzel said.
The Indians won the game 3-1. However, the energy didn’t carry over to game 2, which the Indians were mercy-ruled 16-0.
Game one of the Indians senior night double-header against Washburn Rural begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Twin Oaks Sports Complex.
