Season five of “Stranger Things” by the Duffer Brothers is one of the most highly anticipated Netflix series in a long time, crashing Netflix yet again.
This season has taken them nine years to film. The series as a whole is by far one of my personal favorites. The ‘80s feel of Stranger Things gives the series a nostalgic feeling to many viewers. I especially enjoy the little hints of history within the show that gives it an authentic feel. The show as a whole has suspense, humor, romance, wonderful writing and comedic timing. The season has had many interesting developments that leaves me waiting excitedly for that next release of episodes.
The main themes of this season is about Will’s connection to everything and why he was taken in the first place. The fact that Will is finally getting more of a role on the team has been enjoyable to watch. The developments with him have me on the edge of my seat desiring more episodes.
My biggest hopes going into this season were quickly crushed in the first two episodes. I wanted to see the development of Max’s storyline and how she would be used in this season but after what happened in season 4, that hasn’t happened the way I would have liked. Max’s involvement in the story hasn’t been to the extent that I wanted.
The story also has messed up my favorite character Dustin. Dustin quickly became my favorite character because of his accepting and charming personality. After what happened with Eddie, Dustin should have changed because of the emotions behind it all, but in my opinion he changed in a negative way. Dustin was a very happy character that made many people smile, but with where he is in season 5 he has changed for the worse.
The characters in “Stranger Things” are very interesting because the characters develop in complex ways. The characters throughout the seasons also enter these different matchups. This season we have some new “parties” as usual which leads to new understandings of characters as relationships develop. Most seasons of “Stranger Things” we get new characters that “join the gang.” This season we get a few existing characters becoming more involved. The rest of the Wheeler family gets dragged into the mess of the secret world upside down. The season also brings on a more military against the rebels trope feel more so than previous seasons. The Upside Down has the most screen time in this season compared to previous seasons in the series. The party is finally learning their way around both their world and the Upside Down.
One of my favorite things about this show is the comparison of the real world, the Upside Down and Dungeons and Dragons games. These comparisons continue in this new season. Characters are learning about themselves and their roles in all of these settings.
This series as a whole doesn’t have anything quite like it. It has lots of different ideas mixed into it which makes it such an amazing story. It has a lot of the classic ‘80s movies and series like “Goonies” and “ET.” This season is different from all the others; the closest season to this season would be season 4, which had a more man hunt feel which is also true in season five. The roles are more reversed in this season compared to season 4.
I predict that the final episode will be one of the most emotional of this series yet. I will be bold and predict that everyone dies in the end and the upside down takes over the real world. I believe with the new additions and new capabilities of the team they will be able to put up a good chance against Vecna. I look forward to what is to come and will be sitting on the edge of my seat to watch that final show down.
