Spanish club learns to Salsa dance

This week, Manhattan High School’s Spanish Club got a chance to show their skills on the dancefloor in a cultural way. Led by two professional dance instructors, club members learned to dance the salsa. While the experience was challenging for many with limited prior dance practice, it proved to be entertaining.

“It was a lot of fun. We goofed around with it,” club president junior Matt Turnley said. “I’m not really good at dancing myself, but it was fun to get all of the club members together and see how bad at salsa we really were.”

Salsa dancing has become somewhat of a tradition at Spanish Club. Last year, club sponsors Olivia Leon and Lindsey Clark first invited the dance instructors to MHS. According to Turnley, that event’s success was the reason why the current officers decided to host dancing lessons again.

As the year comes to a close, the club has only a few more meetings left on the agenda. What exactly will occur at these meetings is still yet to be decided. However, the officers hope to continue the annual ice cream social that is normally held at this time of the year.

The end of the semester also signals a change of leadership for the club. This year, Matt Turnley was able to continue the family legacy at the presidential position, succeeding his older brother, Jonathan Turnley. He is pleased with the way that this year panned out.

“[Being the club president] is a lot of responsibility, but it’s a lot of fun because we have a lot of members and a great organization,” Turnley said. “There were a lot of other officers who helped me, so I’m not the only one at all.”
