Manhattan High’s chapter of AFS, the international organization that sends foreign exchange students all over the world, is looking ahead to next year with opportunities for local people to be host families for foreign exchange students.
AFS sponsor Silvan Plattner said AFS goal is to bring people and communities closer together through the student exchange program, which requires a lot of preparation to get students placed. Families who apply and are accepted will get profiles of students who could potentially come to MHS next year.
“Some host families might look for foreign exchange students that have the same similarities with them so it would be easier to connect with them,” Plattner said.
Plattner, who was an exchange student here at MHS when he was a student, said he would love to have as many foreign exchange students as possible so more people can find out about unique cultures from around the world.
“I feel like my job is to help the foreign exchange students and get them accustomed and help them if there’s any issues,” Plattner said. “We should put in a little more effort to help these students connect with as many people as possible.”
