High School is only four years. It is the place where you become someone or learn who you want to be. Going into high school, I had a fuzzy idea of who I wanted to be. I thought I wanted to be a voice actor originally and do something theater based. The crazy thing is I never did theater in my whole high school career.
Thankfully, my sophomore year, after not getting any of the classes I had asked for, I stumbled into 21st Century Journalism class. I never would have guessed I would be a journalist when I was in middle school, or even freshman year. In middle school, I tried to join everything and never really found a passion. I took part in theater and did a bit of yearbook, but honestly everything I did then was experimental.
I was granted an opportunity to help with the livestreams even though I wasn’t in the video production class my sophomore year. I remember being so excited to go to a Manhattan High School soccer game at Bishop Stadium where I would get to help. I was put on the middle camera, the easiest one of them all because it’s a wide shot. I just followed the action as best I could then I was asked to zoom in. I looked around frantically for the button that may zoom in and I finally just asked how to zoom in. That was the moment I truly fell in love with this field of work. It is all about asking the right questions and taking every opportunity given to you, even if it may seem really bad, it will teach a lesson you will hold dearly to your heart.
To everyone in high school right now, you do not need to know what you want to do. Finding my passion took many leaps of faith. The only way to truly find your passion is to just try things. Even if it is scary, it just takes one time till you truly know if you like something or hate it.
As an introvert myself I don’t really like big groups but finding a small set of good friends, then having a club or group you enjoy as well. You find yourself enjoying many friends. Just enjoy the moment even if it sucks because you won’t ever be able to experience it again.
I would not be Online Editor-in-Chief if I got the classes I wanted sophomore year. I would not be in video production if I hadn’t tried a camera for a soccer game. I am who I am because of the opportunities and chances I took.
