Theater Coffee House tradition continues

Thespian Coffee House is a tradition that Manhattan High’s drama club has organized for several years.

“We’ve been doing this since I came here as a freshman, so definitely at least for four years, but I think longer than that. It’s a tradition,” senior Emma Gallitzer said. “It’s a little bit of a fundraiser we try to do it one or two times every year but I am hoping that we do more than that this year.”

The purpose of the event is to show different talents that Thespians and other students have. Thespian officers got together and organized the event to decide when it was going to happen and then advertised it.

“A couple weeks ago we tried to set up a date when there was not, like, any other things going on and we just put up flyers we advertise our Facebook and Twitter and talk about how great it is because it is great,” senior Savannah Smith said.

Students who wanted to come had to give $2 or a food item to share with everyone. They were allowed to perform any kind of act they wanted.

“It doesn’t have to be just Thespians,” Thespian sponsor Linda Uthoff said. “It could be anybody from school. I mean yeah, Thespians are hosting it, but anybody that wants to sing or play an instrument or tell a story maybe do something of their original poetry can come.”

The event worked as a small get-together after the musical and people learned new things about acting and performing in front of an audience.

“It’s about giving people more opportunities to perform,” Uthoff said. “Anytime you get up in front of people and practice being creative or expressing yourself, it’s going to help you no matter what job you go into, so that’s always fun.”
