Walmart Purchases Jet.com

 

On August 8th Walmart purchased Jet.com, a startup posed to become the next Amazon, for $3.3 billion, making it the priciest purchase of a US website in history. Walmart acquired Jet’s acclaimed leader Marc Lore in the process. The purchase will enable Walmart to strengthen its website and better compete with Amazon.

 

Olympics Begin in Rio de Janeiro

 

The 2016 Olympics officially began on August 5. Prior to the kickoff of the games discoveries were made that many Russian athletes had been doping during past Olympic games. The International Olympic Committee consequently required all Russian athletes to prove their innocence before competing.

 

UK Votes to Leave the European Union

 

After months of debating whether the UK should leave the EU, on June 23 British voters narrowly decided to leave by a vote of 52% to 48%. Following the election the British pound fell sharply and British Prime Minister David Cameron resigned. He was succeeded by Theresa May on July 13.

 

Republicans Turn Against Trump

 

Following Donald Trump’s attacks on the family of a slain Muslim US soldier, many Republicans, including Maine Senator Susan Collins and 50 former national-security officials under Republican leadership, have announced that they will not support Trump. That does not mean they all will support Clinton, though, as many have endorsed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson or chosen to support no candidate.
