“Stranger Things” takes television by storm

Sci-Fi and ‘80s nostalgia meet just plain weird in the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things”. After its premiere in July, the show has proven itself to be a skyrocketing success with a 9.1/10 IMDb rating and 90 percent from Rotten Tomatoes.

The supernatural mystery follows the suspicious vanishing of Hawkins Middle School AV Club member and Dungeons and Dragons enthusiast Will Byers. The unlikely team of a cynical police chief, a paranoid mother, two angst-ridden teens and four walkie-talkie wielding kids piece together the clues and discover that the truth behind Will’s disappearance is riddled with the stuff of nightmares. Secretive governments, borderline quantum physics and telekinetic little girls all arise questions that keep viewers reaching for their popcorn and clinging to the edge of their seats.

“Stranger Things,” taking place in 1983 Indiana, also incorporates retro twists into its plot lines. Scenes from the show make frequent references to classic films such as “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and “The Goonies.” The soundtrack includes ‘80s hits like The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and a synth-inspired main theme as well.

The first season consisted of eight thrilling episodes that left audiences begging for more. But have no fear Stranger Things fans, as Netflix has confirmed that the show will be returning for a second season on a date to be determined in 2017.
