$720 Back-to-school shoes

Recently Nike has been accused of trying to replicate the electronically-adjustable shoes that Marty McFly wore in “Back to the Future.”

Nike has come out with a new concept, the Hyper Adapt 1.0 Red Lagoon that retails for $720 on Nike.com. What makes this shoe special? It’s the first fully functioning athletic shoe that electronically adjusts to your foot. All you have to do is step your foot into the shoe and your heel triggers a sensor that makes them tighten around your feet.

Nike is one of the largest growing brands in America for shoes and releases new shoes almost everyday. But even though many people go to a local store for new shoes when back-to-school shopping, would you buy them at $720?

“It’s way too much for them,” sophomore Cade McNeil said. “They better have Bluetooth speakers too.”

The shoes come with two buttons on the side to tighten or loosen the laces to make it perfect for you. Predictions are the Red Lagoons will be gone quick, so earlier this month, Nike released this version in a blue colorway. That combination that were $720 to begin with is now reselling for $7,500 at Stadium Goods in New York, a common reseller for shoes. A lot of people worldwide wants them, so you have to enter a raffle and Nike picks random Nike+ members to buy them.

New students usually buy shoes that are around $20 to $150. Nike is trying to make their shoes more comfortable than what they are right now and this could be the start.

“The most I’ve ever spent on a pair of shoes were $200 and they were for track spikes that lasted me a few years,” junior Parker Wilson said.

However, if costs were not a factor, both McNeil and Wilson said they’d be eager to try the new technology. Nike has never tried this technology so if the response is good, they might start to go into that direction for their future shoes.
