Artist of the Week: AP Visual Arts Students

Elizabeth Alexander, Features Editor

Manhattan High School is home to various classes ranging from several different subjects. The fine arts district of the school does not go unnoticed in the school body. This week, the spotlight shines down upon the seniors of MHS who find themselves comfortable and successful in their AP art classes. Whether they be students wishing to improve their skill for future use, or even just wanting to find a fun way to earn a fine art credit, these students give their positive remarks on their classes.

Can you tell me your personal opinion about your art class this year?

I have just genuinely enjoyed just coming in here every single day and making art. … I’ve learned a lot of general art skills and learn how to just manage my time and create quality work while also having a deadline. [Xiaomi Zhao, senior]

Has the significance of art increased at all for you because of this class?

Yeah, most definitely, because even though I don’t plan to do this type of art, it does help me be able to do the type of art I want to do in the future. I really see it as an important part of my life and like a hobby. [Kelsey Reith, senior]

Has this class changed how you view traditional art?

It’s helped me to broaden my perspective of what is art, and what makes good art. This class has definitely taught me the importance of exploring and stepping out of your comfort zone and your boundaries. [Emma Kellogg, senior]

Can you say that you have learned skills that you can take away from this class for future use?

I can, yes. It’s definitely pushed me to learn how to be independent and how to rely on myself. .. You have to be self-sufficient in order to be successful in this class. [Camille Fellers, senior]

Would you recommend other art students to take this class? Why or why not?
Yes, very much. If you’re really passionate about art, then I feel like you should join this class. I feel like it’s a good way for you to sub-direct yourself, unlike other classes. I feel like it’s a really good quality to build in a young artist. [Vanessa Guvelle, senior]
