Spanish Club has cultural culinary event

Spanish Club has been cooking up some good food and activities. During their last meeting, the members of the club made homemade tortillas and learned about the significance tortillas have in Spanish speaking countries.

“We wanted to do something more entertaining for the club meeting this week and someone brought up the idea of making tortillas and learning a little about the history of them,” said Madeline Crocker, one of the junior representatives for the club.

They were shown how to make both flour and corn tortillas. Then with four stations set up, the group got started on the recipes themselves and then finished with cooking them. Options of honey, cinnamon and salsa were given to dip your fresh tortillas in.

This was not the only event Spanish Club had planned for the day. After school, the group met again to plant bulbs in the school courtyard. This service project is not the last one planned for Spanish Club. They plan to continue to stay involved with the school and come up with more fun events for the group to stay active.

Cafe Espanol will continue in November with the first meet up on Nov. 1. This is during the celebration of the Day of the Dead.

We’re going to try and do a Day of the Dead theme for that, but it’s [still a] casual coming in the mornings and have coffee and speak Spanish kind of thing,” Senora Clark, Spanish teacher and club sponsor, said about the plans and what Cafe Espanol is.

Spanish Club is still open to new members joining, although joining sooner than later is better.

“If people still want to join it’s $2, and… they can pay me or Olivia Leon (Spanish teacher) and we’ll get you added to the roster to join us for next month’s meeting,” said Clark.
