Varsity tennis players excited about successful match

Manhattan won first place, still maintaining their streak of games won and placing at first.

Varsity girls tennis were given time to pack and rest before their Regional Tournament this past Saturday. Varsity started off their trip to Wichita West by having an early release around 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon. They loaded up and left early Saturday morning, and played at Regionals around 8 a.m. Freshman Jill Harkin and doubles partner seniors Joanna Park and Kira Schartz were named Regional Champions.

Varsity played against Wichita Southeast, Topeka High, Washburn Rural, Junction City, Wichita East and Derby.

Junior Kayla Lei played one singles match along with Harkin. Senior Kate McGee and doubles partner freshman Maura Wiens played one doubles match and Park and Schartz played one doubles.

Harkin scored 4-0, with an overall score of 32, while playing in the finals. Lei played in the finals, scoring 3-1. Harkin placed first for Manhattan, while Lei placed second in singles. Park and Schartz won first place. McGee and Wiens placed fifth as partners.

“I am very proud,” Harkin said. “I feel grateful that I have a great team to share the win with.”

Varsity will play their final match for their two-day 6A State Tournament at Topeka-Kossover early Oct. 18-19.
