Q&A: FFA State competitions canceled, community service project in question

Chanae Parker, junior; FFA president

What events have been canceled for FFA due to the school closure?

“We have a lot of, like for our chapter we had a meeting coming up. We had community service planned, We had fun club activities planned. We had fundraisers planned. And so that has all entirely been canceled and scrapped. And then, as well as, I believe the state competition, or the state competitions are all canceled or state convention. I’m not for certain, but I have a feeling it’s going to be cancelled if it isn’t already … also like CDEs, coming up until state for like the next few weeks in then April too have been canceled.”

Do you think the closure will have much effect on the activeness of FFA?

“Absolutely. I think there’s still ways we can be active, I just think we have to adapt and kind of roll with the punches as they come. It’s kind of a crazy time. We’re living history right now. And so it’s hard too because this is not ever really happened before, it’s unprecedented. And so we’re trying to figure out what’s the best way to proceed. Because this was not like as a club or as officers at the beginning we were trying to plan for like contingencies so like, different ideas or random things in case things happen but like this isn’t something that we expected to happen. And so we’ve started the discussion of what we’re going to do. And we don’t really know what’s going to happen just yet. We’re hoping we can still stay active and still do some community service, even if it’s going to have to look a little different than what we had imagined.”

Any ideas concrete yet?

“Yes and no. We’ve tossed around different ways to donate. Like supplies or money, but it’s hard because we can’t get together to do anything. And so any community service that we like to get to do is going to have to be very limited in that sense I guess. So, we’ve tossed around the idea of donating like supplies or money, but that’s about all we’ve gotten. Like, we haven’t gotten much further at this point.”

How will elections go instead?

“That’s a great question. We’ve briefly talked about that. We don’t have anything figured out yet we’ve talked about ideas on how we could like how we’re going to change it. Yeah, we don’t really know what’s going to happen just yet.”

Is there anything I missed or that you’d like to add?

“I’d just like to say that like we’re really trying to come together and like figure out how the future of the MHS chapters going to look for the next couple of months because it’s not going to be able to be quite like we planned, but we’re trying to adapt and we’re going to still try and be as active as we can but it’s going to have to be a little bit different, of course.”
