MHS’ Hispanic Student Union decided to give back to Manhattan’s health care workers, right before the upcoming holidays. On Dec. 18, club members delivered 70 meals, water bottles and goodie baskets to the doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers at Ascension Via Christi Hospital.

The Hispanic Student Union had a lot of leftover funds that club members — and even former members of the club — made working concessions at Kansas State University football games during previous years. Due to COVID-19 the students weren’t able to do a community service project last spring. With these extra funds the members and officers of the club agreed that supporting healthcare workers was the best way to serve their community right now. 

Club member Ana Wilson said that serving the community is what the Hispanic Student Union does best.

“The whole thing about our club is we want to serve as many people as we can. It’s not just about how we want to spread our culture and who we are as a people,” Ana Wilson said. “And we thought a great idea for that would just be serving other people, because that’s we’re all big on family…So, this is a great opportunity for us, we just jumped on it.”

The club planned the whole thing in about a week. The students coordinated with Hyvee to get discounted meals, and a few of the students’ families pitched in to purchase water bottles and make goodie bags for the healthcare workers.

Club sponsor, Carmen Wilson, said that the members of the Hispanic Student Union did a great job organising this service project and choosing to help healthcare workers right now.

“I think these kids have done a good job deciding what to do,” Carmen Wilson said. “It’s a hard year, there’s only so much we can do, but I think just trying to help other people has been the best part of the whole thing, and especially doctors and nurses.”
