Scholars Bowl preps for final tournaments of the season

Scholars Bowl has had an eventful season so far, going head to head with schools like Lawrence High School and others, leading up to now, as they prepare for their final tournaments of the season.

Scholars Bowl, as math teacher and scholars bowl coach Ted Dawdy puts it, is “team jeopardy” where students go against other schools in tournaments, using their knowledge of academics and answering questions in up to 16 rounds about categories like math, science, social studies, language art, fine arts and a current events question.

Every year the Varsity andJ.V. teams go against many Centennial League schools and smaller schools around places like Wamego. The team has had a number of tournaments in places like Salina, Topeka and more, but have also had a few meets canceled due to COVID.

The team has had some good tournaments despite the small turnout.

“We’ve had some good luck, [we] took second place at [a] Wamego meet [and] we’ve taken first at a couple of others,” social studies teacher and assistant coach Tim Ekart said.

This year the students got to return to face-to-face tournaments after doing many of them of on zoom last year,

“It’s nice to get back into the face-to-face competitions,” Dawdy said, “[although] it was kind of nice doing them virtually.”

While all the students enjoy winning they also enjoy the time they spend together whilst competing.

“I really like spending time with other team members,” senior Grace Higgins said, “it’s a lot of fun solving the questions together and competing together.”

All of the students in scholars bowl have been doing great but there has been some standouts like senior Abrar Nasser.

“He’s been our lead guy for a good three years now,” Dawdy said, “[he’s] well rounded in a lot of areas and has a lot of quick recall.”

There have also been other standouts like juniors Vinny Sun and Julius Neumann.

“It’s just really fun,” Newman said, “[especially] going to the tournaments.”

The students are now preparing for their next meets before the end of the season.

“We’re coming up on league this coming week and we’ve got two other meets going on right before that,” Ekart said.

The teams are hoping to qualify for state and win their next meet.
