The Manhattan High School Scholars Bowl team placed fourth out of 16 teams at their meet on Nov. 9 at Lawrence High.

The schools at the tournament were sorted into two pools of eight, round robining each team in the pool until there was a winner.

“Scholars bowl, I would typically describe it as team ‘Jeopardy,’” head coach Ted Dawdy said. “We go head-to-head with another team. Five on theirs, five on ours.”

Each team had to answer 16 questions per round: three math, three science, three social studies, three language arts, two fine arts and one current event.

“We only had one disappointing match against Olathe,” junior Eli Kunz said. “But apart from that, I felt like we played really well.”

Manhattan ended up winning their pool, but fell short on the semi and constellation rounds, leaving the team in fourth place.

Despite that, it was a great experience for the team.

“I feel like we have a good dynamic going across,” Kunz said. “Everyone fills their niche really well and everyone carries their weight.”

The team also gets to see how well one another performs, with one stand out teammate being sophomore Patrick Fu.

“It’s great being on the team,” Fu said. “Everyone is wonderful to play with and seeing everyone working as a team is nice.”
