Manhattan High School’s band students showcased their musical talents at the Kansas State High School Activities Association Solo and Ensemble Festival on April 26, bringing home several high ratings.
This event provided students with the opportunity to perform individually or in small groups, receiving evaluations from adjudicators to assess their musical skills and artistry. The highest rating a student can achieve is a “1,” signifying an exemplary performance.
“Receiving a 1 some years kind of seems easier some years compared to others because they switch up the judges and there are always going to be judges that are more harsh and looking for more, so it kinda sucks at times,” junior Aeden Gray said. “I try not to get down whenever something doesn’t go the way I want it to and I have to remind myself there is always next year.”
The MHS band program, under the direction of Joel Gittle, has participated in this annual event, which features top marching bands from across the state, for many years and has achieved high rankings.
In addition to marching band, Manhattan High School students have been selected for prestigious honor ensembles. The Solo and Ensemble Festival serves as a platform for students to demonstrate their individual musicianship and receive constructive feedback. Achieving a “1” rating at this festival is a testament to a student’s dedication, preparation and musical ability, which reflects the standards of the band.
“I would say the best part about this contest is just how it helps you build your confidence because it forces you to get out of your comfort zone,” Gray said.
