After a long drought of games due to weather the team was finally able to get some action this past Monday against Topeka High for senior night. The team won 12-2 this past Monday and will play game two on May 1.
The Indians started off hot, scoring four runs in the first inning with a big triple form junior Brayson Gnirk who helped start the scoring. After Gnirk made the game 3-0 junior Sawyer Newton hit a single to score the fourth run of the inning.
In the third, senior Rylan Vikander hit a leadoff home run giving the Indians a 5-0 lead early. Following the homerun Newton was able to hit a double and drive in Gnirk taking a 6-0 lead. Manhattan finished the inning scoring off an error and taking a 7-0 lead.
Vikander clears his mind which has led to his offensive success.
“Just the lack of thought up there, not thinking about it too much, just trying to hit the ball,” Vikander said.
After a scoreless fourth the Indians put two more runs on the board with singles from Newton and sophomore Tyson Kratchovil taking a 9-0 lead.
On the mound for the Indians was junior Carter Goodpasture. Goodpasture threw six innings with six strikeouts while allowing two runs in the sixth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth Newton hit a triple driving one in, Kratchovil hit a single driving the second run in and senior Carter Alsin was walked to walk off the game 12-2 for the Indians.
The Indians next game will be game two against T-High May 1.
“We’re going to stay aggressive,” Gnirk said. “Obviously, we’re going to keep those strikes, and we’re just going to play hard and aggressive.”
