Following the postponement of its road game against Great Bend High last Friday, the Manhattan High girls soccer team tied Blue Valley High, 1-1, at Bishop Stadium last Tuesday. MHS (5-2-1) came into the game looking to continue their three game undefeated streak which they achieved by edging Emporia High and Hayden, and pulling out a draw against Seaman.

The game started out with some back and forth action with no team having a clear advantage for most of the first half.

The second half started off much the same way. The longstanding tie could have been broken 26 minutes after the break when Blue Valley took advantage of a through pass that almost found the tiebreaking goal, but the ball barely hit the crossbar, keeping the scoreless tie.

Fourteen minutes into the second part, freshman Cailey Perkins sent a shot from just outside the box right into the top-left corner to put the Lady Indians up by one. With momentum built, Manhattan would continue to attack but failed to decisively take the game as they could not find the back of the net again. With the game almost over and Manhattan looking like they would pick up their sixth victory of the season, Blue Valley put together a sudden attack with less than a minute left and were able to put the ball past senior goalkeeper Molly Fiser with less than 50 seconds left in the match. The game would go into two halves of scoreless overtime periods, and the game finished a 1-1 draw.

“It’s tough. You kind of feel gutted because there was under a minute, and you would think there only a minute left and we leave the win,” head coach Mike Sanchez said.

The Lady Indians have gone to overtime in four of their eight games so far this season.

“We have to execute and finish out games,” Sanchez said.

MHS will play again today at 6:45 p.m. against Wichita Northwest High at Bishop Stadium.
