Volleyball season has rough start

Last Thursday, Varsity volleyball played their first match of the season in a home game against Silver Lake. Starting off strong, the new team won the first set in a close game of 25-20. Falling behind later on, Manhattan ended up losing the match as the second set ended with a score of 25-17 and the third set ending 25-16 as the favor fell towards Silver Lake.

The team was hurt by losing their first game but that loss gave them the motivation to defeat Seaman in two sets ending at 25-19 and 25-1.

Shawnee Heights was their third match of the night and it left a bitter taste with Shawnee Heights winning both sets 25-13 and, with a close margin, 25-22.

“They have some really strong hitters and it’s a quicker pace game to get the block out,” junior middle blocker Gigi McAtee said. “Shawnee Heights I think we came out a little slow against just because we were intimidated by them but we really fell hard in the second game and almost beat them.”

Losing two out of three matches was not what the girls had hoped for, but it shed light on some areas that needed to be worked on.

“We could have talked a little bit more and just had better communication in general,” senior middle blocker Sarah Middendorf said.
