Band Day has been a tradition at Kansas State University for years. Bands from all over the state of Kansas travel to Bill Snyder Family Stadium and play with the marching band. This year, however, was particularly special.

This year’s band day was one to remember, as K-State’s marching band received the coveted Sudler Trophy. Manhattan High’s marching band got to participate in this memorable moment along with the other bands from across the state.

“This time was special because the band earned the Sudler trophy, which is like the heisman of marching band,” sophomore Gillian Nichols said. “It’s a huge deal.”

According to The Sousa Foundation, the purpose of the Sudler Trophy is to identify and recognize collegiate marching bands of particular excellence that have made outstanding contributions to the American way of life. The trophy has only ever been awarded to 29 other bands in the nation. The honor of receiving the Sudler Trophy was not missed by any other members of the MHS marching band.

“The trophy was awarded to K-state, and it was a big honor to be on the field when that happened, it was really incredible,” sophomore Kenzie Davis said.

Among members of Kansas marching bands, K-State band alumni and alumni twirlers joined in on the half time fun.

Another facet to Band Day is the infamous parade. The parade is intended for MHS marching band and other bands that were invited to march throughout Manhattan. Unfortunately in the previous two years, the parade has been cancelled for various reasons.

“The parade was cancelled for construction this year,” Davis said. “Everyone was sad, but you can’t really help when stuff like that happens.”
