After a series of tough games that came their way in the last few weeks, the Manhattan High soccer team gained two straight wins to get to a record 9-3.

The first matchup was an away game against Hayden High on Oct. 6. Manhattan won by mercy rule as they defeated Hayden by a score of 10-0. Senior Gabe Awbrey and senior Ben Turnley both had two goals to lead the Indians to another victory away from home.

The next opponent for MHS would be Topeka High. The game went scoreless through the first half with the teams sharing possession of the ball throughout the half. Senior Austin French finally gave the Indians the win in the second half with a game winning goal. With that win the Indians moved to 9-3.

On the JV side, Manhattan competed in a quad tournament in which MHS won their first game and then lost in the second in a penalty shoot-out against Washburn Rural.

“ The game was long. It was disappointing that we couldn’t get the win” sophomore Brett Taliaferro said.

Manhattan has now lost twice against Washburn Rural this season with the Varsity also losing earlier this year by a score of 4-2.

“It was a tough game. We had a lot of opportunities so, same with Washburn. We couldn’t score so we lost in penalties,” sophomore midfielder Victor Banda said.

He along the rest of the JV team had won a game earlier against Emporia State to get them to the finals of the competition. “We felt really sad but we just stuck together, we really felt we deserved it,” Banda said.

On the other side, the Varsity team will prepare for their next game.

The Indians look to improve and gain 10 wins for the season as they face Wichita Northwest later tomorrow.
