Enjoying technology is not a crime

There is a fine line between enjoying technology and letting it take over your life. Recently, it has become a popular practice to say that technology is ruining our youth, and that millennials are more focused on their phones or computers than the world around them, which just isn’t true.

Teenagers, particularly young girls, are being shamed for something as simple as taking selfies. While yes, everything in moderation, if you think you look good by all means take a picture. Who is it hurting? I personally believe it’s healthy to take pictures when you feel good about yourself. It’s important to build yourself up when the world is constantly tearing you down for your appearance.

People love to tear down those who enjoy the advanced technology of today, and I believe it’s mostly to feel above others. Saying you enjoy books over Twitter doesn’t make you an intellectual and it doesn’t make you any better than me. I feel like when you knock out all technology as destructive and “ruining our youth,” you’re ignoring all the good that the technology we have at our fingertips can do. You can learn languages, connect with people and enrich your life with something that seems like a necessity.

To say that we are a generation that is all about our screens is ignoring what we are doing on our screens. If you think students are on their phone and only on Twitter or Snapchat, you are severely misinformed.
