March 1 Athlete of the Week: Mason Wallace

Junior Mason Wallace has, literally, wrestled his way back as athlete of the week being the only Manhattan wrestler to win State at the two day tournament in Wichita this past Saturday.

“The season turned out good but we got second as a team,” Wallace said.

Not only that, but Wallace has now won two state championships in consecutive years, defeating various opponents from two different weight classes in his three years wrestling under Coach Robert Gonzalez.

“Nothing was going to stop me from reaching my goal,” Wallace said.

Wallace started wrestling with varsity since he was a freshman and he hasn’t stopped since, helping the Indians win both Centennial League and regionals this season as well as earning the most outstanding wrestler award at Centennial. With one more year to go under Gonzalez and the Indians, Wallace has clear what his goals are for his remaining time at MHS.

“We’re not satisfied,” Wallace said. “I expect our team to come back stronger. Our goal is to get a ring. We’re coming for that State title next year.”
