Golf takes Topeka High meet

After last Monday’s winds gusting up to 19 miles per hour, boys golf won the Topeka High meet with a team score of 501 at Lake Shawnee in Topeka. Junior Wesley Grogan placed second with a score of 80, sophomore Raul Garibay placed third with a score of 81 and freshman Josh Priddle placed fifth with a score of 82.

After the meet last week, the team decided to buckle down and focus.

“I think practice has been going really well. We’ve been really focused this year and just trying to improve on our short game and our accuracy stuff because that’s where you score and lose strokes,” junior Dustin Wichman said. “All of our top three have been playing well, they’ve had good scores in tournaments. Cole [Gritton, senior] and Trevor [Dillon, senior] have been doing a really good job of getting people to work hard after practice and not just during practice and their scores have been leading the teams and stuff in tournaments, so it’s been nice to have that big senior presence.”

The top three of the Varsity golf team consist of Gritton, Dillon and sophomore Ben Robben.

“It feels good [being a sophomore in the top three of Varsity]. I have a couple years left, so it’s good feeling to know that I have a spot,” Robben said. “I just got to trust the practice that I put in, all the hard work I put in. I’ve been improving my swing, doing a lot of drills and improving my putting which has been really crucial. My putting is really important. I just got to trust my preparation. It’s really just another round of golf and if you treat it like anything else than the pressure becomes too much.”

The team played last night at Topeka Country Club.
