North Korea Conducts Another Nuclear Test

 

North Korea announced on Friday that it had developed a nuclear warhead capable of fitting onto a missile. Several countries have dismissed the development as a hoax, and the United States and South Korea have vowed to find ways to further sanction North Korea.

 

Brazil Impeaches its President

 

Dilma Rousseff, president of Brazil, was impeached by a Senate vote of 61-20 on Aug. 31. Rousseff had been convicted of using bank credits to manipulate the country’s budget. Following her impeachment, vice-president Michel Temer became president.

 

Venezuelan President Shamed by Protesters

 

Banging pots-and-pans, Venezuelan protesters expressed their disapproval of Nicolas Maduro as he passed through a district in early September. The incident underscores Maduro’s unpopularity in the country given that he was once widely popular in the district that ridiculed him. Maduro has been blamed for food and power shortages across the country and has refused to address calls for his resignation.

 

Georgetown Apologizes to Former Slaves

 

Georgetown University announced on Sept. 1 that it regretted a decision it made in 1838 to sell 272 slaves. It offered to provide an admissions advantage to the descendants of those slaves, should they apply to Georgetown, as compensation.
