Soccer increases losing streak, continues winless in season

As if it couldn’t get any worse for coach Frank Alonso and the Manhattan boys soccer team, they once again failed to win their first game of the season, losing the remaining games in the Titan Classic tournament. The Indians came down against Wichita North and Wichita Northwest 5-0 and 4-1 respectively

“We play good at certain times but intensity drops constantly,” senior captain Conall Root said. “I really don’t know, [we] just don’t have a high workrate or intensity level.”

The Indians have now lost four straight games and have started 0-4 for the first time in Alonso’s coaching tenure. Manhattan had not even scored a goal until senior captain Angel Fraire scored against Wichita Northwest early in the game.

“Overall we’re a bad team, we’re really good individually so we have to learn how to work together and not individually. My goal doesn’t really matter, we didn’t win,” Fraire said.

This result has now prompted Alonso to examine his team more closely as they look ahead to their first home game against Shawnee Heights.

“[Alonso] was very frustrated with our performance,” Root said. “He’s just looking for players to show up and perform.”

“He’s saying that so we can get everything together and play like we were playing during the summer.” Fraire said. “We have to win the next game. It’s a home game.”

The Indians will make their home opener today against Shawnee Heights at Bishop Stadium.
