Senior JJ Dunnigan, officially committed to the University of Miami Sunday, after withdrawing his “commitment” to the University of Kansas on Oct. 27.
“[Miami] made me a priority in the program,” Dunnigan said. “They told me, I come in and make an immediate impact. And obviously the weather down there and the life is great.”
Dunnigan, a four-star, is ranked No. 2 in Kansas for the class of 2026. During the time he was “committed” to KU, Dunnigan had his mind set on playing both sides of the ball, just like he’s done for Manhattan High; that priority has since changed.
“I want to be developed as a safety,” Dunnigan said.
Dunnigan’s ultimate goal, however, has not changed.
“I want to play in the NFL,” Dunnigan said.
Dunnigan’s announcement came in the form of a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“All glory to God for blessing me with the strength and guidance to reach this point. Thank you to my family for sticking by my side, and thank you to the coaches that believed in me. With that being said, I’m committed to the University of Miami,” Dunnigan said in the post.
Dunnigan has been a game changer for the Indians this season, giving opponents headaches in all three phases — offense, defense and special teams – and helping the Indians reach a 8-2 record so far this season.
“Not a lot of people think he works hard. They think he’s [all] talent. But he does work hard behind the scenes. When everybody’s just out partying, he’s working,” freshman Adonis Dunnigan, JJ’s younger brother, said.
Adonis, who plays defensive back on Varsity as just a freshman, has an offer from the University of Miami himself. JJ’s commitment to Miami, is of intrigue to Adonis, but he acknowledges that his high school career has only just begun.
“I still have a lot of time in my journey, you know, in committing and stuff like that. But it does pique my interest,” Adonis said.
JJ is the 14th four-star recruit from the class of 2026 committed to Miami, in addition to one five-star recruit, according to 247 Sports.
JJ’s first ever visit to the University of Miami is scheduled for Nov. 15. He expressed what he’s most looking forward to about the Miami football program.
“Getting to work,” Dunnigan said. “Me and all my teammates and building connections.”
