Manhattan High Girls Swim is entering the postseason with momentum on their side.
MHS will be taking the defending Centennial League champions and a new record holder with them to the competition. Senior Layla Schwabauer broke the 23-year standing 6 Dive school record, formerly held by Kellyn Williams. Manhattan’s performance against Centennial League teams earlier this season is giving them confidence that they will be able to defend their title.
“It [the Topeka West Invitational] wasn’t a huge meet, but it was nice to see that we are beating everybody in our League as we get ready for League in a couple of weeks,” coach Alex Brown said.
The Indians have looked unstoppable at times, although they failed to medal a single time at the Kaupaun Invitational. MHS got off to a hot start to begin the season. They took home silver at the Emporia Invitational on March 26 and the Lansing Relays on March 28. They also won their first meet of the year on March 31 at Topeka, scoring a whopping 677 points. Additionally, at Salina on April 9, they topped the podium. They closed out the regular season strong with wins against tough competition at Hayden on April 22 and Marion on April 24.
At League, the Indians will have their last chance to break State cut-off times in order to qualify. All qualifying swimmers will attend State championships at Shawnee Mission on May 22-23. League will take place at Hummer Park on May 14.
MHS will be training as hard as they have all season in preparation for League and State
“We just have practice after practice after practice,” senior captain Caris Goering said. “We just have to show up to practice with a really good attitude and expect it to be hard and just give it as much effort as you can so that it can, so we can be best prepared for League. I think we’re going to win League. I don’t really think there’s a doubt about it.”
