Mr. MHS hopefuls fill out their applications

Mr. MHS applications are due Jan. 11, and only two and a half weeks later is the pageant. Mr. MHS is basically a mock beauty pageant for high school men. It follows the same format as a traditional beauty pageant, “…just not a traditional way of doing it…”. Their costumes are much less serious.

“Night wear can be pretty much anything. Swimsuit can be anything water related; we’ve had things like aquaman and lifeguards,” student council representative and Mr. MHS overseer, Leslie Campbell said.

Each man will do two dances. They do an opening number where they come in wearing costumes. “They do a dance number that we usually bring in the dance team to help with. Then they also have the talent portion where they are judged, we bring in a panel of outside judges who judge them on their talent. Also, student council, BPA and ASF set the whole thing up,” said Campbell.

“For the most part the students are the ones who take care of everything, they write the script and they’ll do the auditions for who gets to be involved,” Campbell said. “My job with Mr. MHS is to put in any purchase orders that are necessary, if there is organizational stuff I take care of that, basically things that the students can’t do on their own. I oversee and make sure they haven’t missed something,”

Some known applicants are Senior Rami Khamis, Senior Cade Roberts, Senior Nathan Clark,  Senior Gavin Larios, Senior Mitch Elliot and Senior Jalyn Kirk.

So, what does it take to be Mr. MHS?

“You’ve got to have some pretty unique ideas,” Khamis said. “I thinks it’s better if you be yourself. The more creative you are the better chance you have. I’d like to win because my brother eight years ago did Mr. MHS, so that’s like the main reason that I want to do it, to keep that up, but otherwise I’m a pretty funny guy, I’m, well, I hope I’m likeable and I like to think that I’m super creative.”

Not only does one have to have unique ideas, but candidates should also be themselves.

“I think it takes a little bit of yourself and your personality,” Roberts said. Also you’ve gotta throw a little bit of humor in there. I want to win it honestly. The first time I saw it, I think I was in eighth grade and I was like ‘that’s something I wanna do when I go to highschool’. Last year I couldn’t because I had a basketball game on the day of the pageant. So this year I was lucky enough to not have it fall on a day like that.

You’ve also got to please the judges.

“You’ve just gotta please the crowd and the judges, please everyone and make everyone laugh, that’s my main goal,” Larios said. I know there’s gonna be a lot of competition this year but I’m ready to take it on.

You’ve got to use humor to please those judges.

“You have to have humor, considering current events is a big part to writing funny responses,” Clark said. “You just all around have to be an awesome person. But having a good talent is the big thing.”

Stand out against other candidates.

“Creativity, and actually taking time to write your application instead of just going through it,” Elliott said. “You have to be funny. You have to have creative ideas for all of your costumes, and you don’t just wanna wing it. Be original,” Elliott said.

“Be honest with yourself and to others.”

“Telling the truth of course,” Kirk said. You should at least have character and a good attitude. I don’t know exactly how it goes because I’m new to this, just good character and good vibes. The real reasons why [I want to win] is because the past couple of years, personally I’ve had a couple of bounce backs. It seems like something that I could come out and show everybody that I can do it, and say that I at least tried.”
