Softball splits opening night

After a week full of indoor practices due to weather, the softball team took to the turf fields at Anneberg Park to compete against Topeka West Friday night.

In the first game of the double header, the team struggled and lost 6-5. However, the girls managed to end the night on top with a 10-8 in the second game of the double header.

The success of the second game was a result of the team’s offense.

“We definitely got our bats working in the second game,” junior Anna Batt said. “We were able to read the speed of the pitcher better and we got more hits into the gaps.”

With only one returning senior, the team is fairly young compared to other teams in the league. However, other girls have stepped up to the plate to fill the lack of seniors.

“It’s weird being the only senior, but I definitely have some upperclassmen girls that are helping me out as if they were seniors,” senior Chelsey Henry said.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, the team will continue to work together in order to achieve victories.

“How we pulled together in the second game to rally and get the win shows we will do great things this season win or lose,” Batt said. “This first doubleheader proves that we still have things to work on, but that we can come together as a team and do some great stuff.”

In addition, the girls are expected to improve as time goes on.

“The rest of the season I think will go really well just because our team is really capable of fixing anything that comes our way,” Henry said. “We just need to keep improving every game and practice, too.”

In order to improve, the team will continue working on offense to eliminate losses.

“I think adjusting to different speeds of pitchers will be a big improvement to work on,” Batt said.

When it comes to defense, the biggest point of improvement is field coverage.

“Defensively things were really good the whole time, we usually communicated and everything,” Henry said. “They just hit it to some spots that we struggled on getting the ball sometimes.

The softball team will face Shawnee Heights at Anneberg Park at 4 p.m. today.
