5 Seconds of Summer drops hot single ‘Want You Back’

5 Seconds of Summer has been MIA, leaving fans in a dry spell for three years. The Australian pop-rock band has been releasing EP’s since 2012 with two albums of their own. They have been out of the news after their latest album “Sounds Good Feels Good” dropped in 2015, which they proceeded to go on tour for.

That changed on Feb. 22 when the band blessed fans with a straight bop once again, even though it is only a single.

“Want You Back” has an ironic title, because 5SOS fans all over the world were wanting them back and are relieved to here they were making a comeback. The song itself is not like their other ones; it has a softer vibe and is techno-ish with more piano than guitar. The band members don’t sing as aggressively or harshly in this single; they have more of a soothing tone. Throughout the song they keep the “carefree” type of sound. It is the type of sound that makes you want to hop in a Jeep with no top and drive around town with your best friend.

They sing their words in their music with great emotion. The boys sing about how they want this person back and they take the whole song to describe things about the person, especially about their clothing. It’s not an abnormal thing for them to sing about. The only problem I had with the song is that the basics of the words they chose are kind of normal and are almost guessable; the sound of the song covers up that fact, though.

By going and watching interviews of 5SOS on “Want You Back,” band members Calum Hood, Luke Hemmings, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford tell us that this single, which will hopefully be a future album, portrays who they were, who they are and who they are striving to be. The band did an amazing job on switching the way their songs sound while still keeping some things from when they started in 2011.

It’s the number one song streamed on Spotify for the band for a good reason. Overall, ‘Want You Back”  is a bop and should be listened to by everyone. This is the beginning of a new era for 5 Seconds of Summer and I am 100 percent down for it.
