Athlete of the Week: Talon Claussen

Micheal Simmons, Sports Editor

In sports there is always a certain combination of skill and athleticism involved,  no matter the sport. Being a pitcher typically means that there will be a lot more skill involved than athleticism,  meaning it takes several years to demonstrate mastery, especially to the level that senior Talon Claussen has.

“I did a good job of staying in the zone and getting my off-speed on,” Claussen said. “When they were behind on my fastball, I could always throw the off-speed and count on a solid strike. Whenever you can get a lead early up on the game, it really helps relax everybody and really allows everybody to play.”

While pitching require more skill than some of the other positions in the sport, it is not the only ability that Claussen can perform. He can also score.

“It’s always good to score some runs yourself,” Claussen said. “I mean, as long as we’re scoring runs, it doesn’t really matter, but when it’s yourself scoring, it makes you feel a little better. I was just having fun, it was a pretty good game, and I’m happy it was only one hit, but getting that down to no hits would be even better.”

Claussen is participating in the next Varsity baseball game on Friday at home.
