New series uncovers the truth about suicide

Nina Kumle, Staff Writer

An astonishing story that shows the shocking truth about suicide, the series and book “Thirteen Reasons Why.”

The book “Thirteen Reasons Why” came out in 2007, 10 years later the series was released on Netflix, premiering on March 31,

Between the book and the new series, there were quite a few differences, but the differences did not greatly affect the overall point of the story.

The story follows a young teen going through a series of horrific events, so awful, she believed the only way to stop the pain was through suicide. She pulled together 13 reasons that supported this decision. She then put all of them on tapes and directed them through the 13 individuals that hurt her.

Even the start of the first episode pulls you in and makes you want to know more. Through this serious subject, the director found a way to make it intriguing.

Nowadays most TV shows are purely to entertain, and while “Thirteen Reasons Why” does entertain, it also teaches how the way you say something to someone can really hurt, even when you don’t intend to do so. This book and now series gives awareness to bullying and shows the effects of it.

After the first episode, I didn’t understand how Clay could have possibly been involved in Hannah’s death, so I watched more and more hoping each new episode would be his tape, because what could have someone so kind have done to hurt someone that they truly loved

Finally I got to Clay’s tape, I didn’t know what I was going to think after his tape because they were close friends Clay and Hannah, but how he got on one of those tapes is shocking and so different from the other 12.

By the end of the last episode, I was shocked. Although this did not really happen, it still felt so real. Even though I do not bully, it made me think of how the way I say things can hurt someone. Those jokes you say that you think are just hilarious, may not be so funny to the one you’re laughing at.

Throughout the whole show I felt like I was in the story but no one knew I was there. When someone got hurt, it felt so real even though it was just happening inside a screen.

So yes, the book and the series had many difference, but that is typical when trying to make a book into a series or movie, but the main point that they are trying to get across is the same.
