Manhattan High track takes second, fourth at Seaman

The Manhattan High Varsity track team broke even more records on Friday at the Seaman Relays as the boys came home with their first second place finish of the season and the girls came home in fourth.

Senior Clara Mayfield won the girls 1600 meter race while also breaking the school record set by Cara Melgares at the 2017 Centennial League meet that year. This is the second record she has broken this season, as she broke the 3200 meter record on April 14.

“[Breaking the record] feels good,” Mayfield said. “I feel like a weight lifted off my shoulders for sure. I still want to continue to run faster than that in the 1600, but knowing I don’t have to certainly relieves a lot of pressure.”

Out of the entire Varsity girls team to compete at the Seaman Relays, Mayfield was the only member to place first in an event. However, the girls did manage to come with two second place finishes and one third place finish.

“Fourth at this meet is a pretty good result because there is a lot of competition,” Mayfield said. “I think it shows we have a little better standings going into state this year, but there is still a lot of work to be done. It is harder to score later in the season as well as at bigger meets. The goal is always to win, so no fourth isn’t what we aimed for.”

The Varsity boys team ensured that they faced a different outcome, as they had three different first place finishes. The team didn’t place scoring points at the top of their priority list, possibly explaining the outcome of their meet and the first time this season that the boys Varsity team placed second at a meet.

“[The team] use [the Seaman relays] more as a meet to compete with some of the KC schools we don’t see very often,” head coach Kory Cool said. “We do not set it up to see how many points we can score, [like how ] we will at state.”

The team’s next meet is on Friday at Salina, where they will compete in the Salina Relays.
