Two Manhattan High seniors took home more than just a medal from the Seaman Relays last week. Seniors Daniel Harkin and Darius O’Connell each broke an MHS record during the meet.

Harkin ran a 9:11 3200M, breaking Chris Melgares’s record set in 2014, and O’Connell threw 61-3 breaking Jim Favrows record set in 1977.

“I felt happy [after breaking the record],” O’Connell said. “My goal from sophomore year had finally been accomplished… I didn’t think I was going to break it last week, but I knew I was going to break it because I was throwing better and better each week.”

Other athletes who placed on the boys side include sophomore Julian Availia-Vargas placing first in the 800 meters, senior Jason Moran also taking first in the Javelin and the 4×400 also taking the gold medal. Those who made runner-up in their events were Senior Charles Jones in Long Jump along and senior Jaden Magana in discus.

On the girls team, sophomore Avery Larson placed first in the long jump, and senior Alyx Glessner took second in javelin.

The team competes next at the Centennial League meet on May 13.
