After having just one golfer play through to the second day of the state championship, Manhattan High’s girls golf team left Emporia Tuesday with a 10th-place score of 401.

Rylee Wisdom, sophomore, led the team with a 97 on day 1 and placed 34th out of the 56 individuals who qualified for day 2.

Despite being the only individual player to come back for round two, Wisdom played like it was “just a normal day.”

“It was just me playing, basically,” Wisdom said. “I was thinking to myself, it’s just a normal day, just play, take risks. Like, it was another day practicing.”

Freshmen Kaitlyn Lagabed and Emily Wuggazer each shot a 101. Junior Alexis Smith shot a 102, sophomore Jennifer Kim finished with a 106 and freshman Ruby Wendt shot a 143. 

Wind caused problems for the girls throughout the tournament.

“The course was fine. The weather was pretty bad,” Wisdom said. “The wind, it was like 20 miles per hour, maybe 30. Sometimes it was tough to play through it.”

Despite the 10th place finish, the future looks bright for the Manhattan High girls golf team. Manhattan only had one player older than a sophomore qualify for state. 

“Considering our age, we competed very well,” Wisdom said. “In the offseason we have time to improve and get better at the things we need to and hopefully come back stronger next season.”
