Hitting the road on Tuesday, the Manhattan High Varsity girls basketball team fell to the undefeated Topeka High Trojans (9-0), losing by 21 points and going 53-78.

According to junior Avery Larson, the team was short players due to “a combination of a couple of players sick and COVID protocol.”

“We played the majority of the game with only six players,” Larson said. “Despite the outcome, we feel like we did a lot of things well.”

Regardless of the final score, the girls persevered throughout, contributing to a “competitive” game, according to Larson.

“We hustled and worked hard the entire game,” Larson said. “No one gave up.”

On Friday, Jan. 14, the girls planned to play Seaman, but due to COVID-related school closure, the game has been postponed to Wednesday, Feb. 2. Before then, the girls have a three-day McPherson tournament starting Thursday. According to Larson, the team is capitalizing on the week-long break between games to come out strong on tournament day.

“We’re really excited going into the tournament,” Larson said. “Going a little over a week without any games gives us extra time to practice what we need to work on. We’re excited to get back out on the court and play.”
