Night school starts again

Night school was initiated a few years ago at MHS, but has since then dissipated, until Jan. 18. Now, Monday through Thursday, students in need of credit recovery can enroll in night school and go to the library from 3:30 to 6 p.m. to focus on their school work, with the help of tutors and night school coordinator Lisa Julian.

“Night school is an opportunity for students who are in need of credit recovery…to come in and get some additional time and support using the Excellus program to earn those credits,” Julian said.

Hybrid and remote learning put some students behind, and Julian wanted to see that change.

“COVID was hard on a lot of students and their ability to get what they needed from their classes last year was tough,” Julian said. “And so we wanted to recognize that and give an opportunity where students could get help on a regular consistent basis and meet the requirements so that they could graduate on time.”

According to one student, night school helps them stay focused.

“I feel like I’ve accomplished more by being here and have gotten a lot of work done,” an unnamed source said. “If they have this next year, then I definitely recommend going.”

Night school is designed to be an encouraging environment where students can just get things done.

“[Students] have lots of different situations as to why they might need that additional support,” Julian said. “And giving them an opportunity to do that with certified teachers who can help them through it when they run into stumbling blocks is essential. It demonstrates to them that we care about them now and their future. And sometimes people just need to know that there’s someone out Azra looking out for them.”
