Track Mid-Winter Relays canceled

Varsity track’s first meet of the year, the Topeka West Invitational Mid-Winter relays that was scheduled for Thursday, was canceled and will not be rescheduled due to inclement weather.

“They said it was just too cold and windy,” Head Coach Kory Kool said. “It’s expected to be cold and we’ve had it be successfully run before in cold weather, so I’m not really sure why the hesitancy. But, it makes sense for the sprinters… [because if] they don’t get a good enough warm up, they could pull a hamstring or get injured.”

Many schools don’t start competing in track until next week, so the cancellation doesn’t put the team behind.

“For us, it’s usually just a jumpstart, where we can see where we’re at a week before everybody else does,” Kool said. “But we’ll just take it in stride.”

The team competes next at Junction City on Friday.
